Brainwaves and Mental States

You might have heard of music with different brainwaves such as Alpha Waves Study Music, or Theta Waves or Delta Waves Sleep Music.  What are those brainwaves?

Brainwaves are patterns of an electrical activity of brain, and cyclic and wave-like.  They are associated with a certain mental state.  For example, when you are alert, attentive, and engaged in focused mental activity, the frequency range of human brain activity is between 13-30 Hertz* (cycles per second) called Beta Waves.  That dominates most of your normal waking state.

Alpha Waves (8-12 Hz*) indicate the resting state for the brain.  You are in deep relaxation like daydreaming, but still alert, so you know what’s going on around you.  I have seen this state in most of my clients while they are receiving a massage (others fall asleep).  Their breathing gets deeper and stable and can be mistaken that they are asleep.  However, when I ask questions, they can immediately respond because they are alert at the same time.

To experience alpha waves effectively, the eyes should be closed.  The alpha waves help overall mental coordination, calmness, mind/body integration, learning and concentration.

Theta Waves (4-7 Hz*) occur during light sleep or deep meditation, including the REM dream state.  You might experience vivid imagery, inspiration, and creativity.  It is said that a sense of deep spiritual connection and unity with the universe can be experienced.

Delta Waves (0.5-3 Hz*) are the slowest brainwaves and present in deep dreamless sleep and transcendental meditation.  Healing and regeneration are stimulated in this deep sleep state.

 *The numbers vary among studies.
